Dances & Performing arts:

 

Kaikottikali, also known as Thiruvathirakali, a group dance of ladies. They move in circles taking rhythmic steps and singing songs along with dance steps. They make gesture like hand movements and sometimes they clap their hands . Though the gestures have no particular meaning, they add beauty to the dance.This is a fine piece of LASYA dance displaying attractive rhythms.

 
     
 

One singer leads and others join in chorus.Songs in classical ragas as well as folk tunes are used. Normally there is no orchestral accompaniments.Many famous poets have composed songs for this.Originally this used to be performed during the Tiruvathira ( Ardra) star festival to propitiate Lord Siva and goddess Parvathy.     Now - a -days it is performed on all auspicious occasions and for social events. Many of the movements in Mohiniyattam are traced to this dance. The normal dress is typical Kerala ladies dress ie: set mundu with blouse. Now - a - days big silk bordered set mundus are  being used to make it more more gorgeous.

 
     
 


Kathakali :

It is the most popular dance of the state and represents a harmonious blend of dance,drama and music. The dance is unique and can be distinguished on the basis of make-up and costumes.

ChakyarKoothu:
Is a performance of storytelling. Usually Puranic verses are performed by a male actor.Verses are recited and explained. It is full of humour and wit. Even the members of the audience are made fun of imagining them to be characters in the story.

NangyarKoothu
The same as Kootiyattam. The role of the female character is separated and a single artist presents it with detailed abhinaya.

Mohiniyattam:
This typical dance form traces its origin to Mohini, the enchantress. The technique is essentially feminine and languorous and the movements are very mild and graceful.

Koodiyattam:
The enactment of Sanskrit drama in Kerala. It has a history of more than 2000 years. There are special theatres (Kuthambalam) inside selected prominent temples for its performance in Kerala.Both males and females participate. Its popularity is increasing and performances are done outside temples also. The UNSCO has declared Kootiyattam as an "intangible heritage" of India.

Folk Performing Arts:
The tribals of the state have still preserved their folklore traditions.Theyyamthira, Mudiyettu, Kaduvakali, Velakali, Kakkarissinatakom, Margamkali, Kolkali, Parichamuttukali, Bhadrakalipattu, Thiruvathirakali etc are some of the folk performances of Kerala.
